Annular

Annular is a work by local Orkney artist Evie Donaldson.

It was first shown in St Magnus Cathedral in June 2023 as part of the St Magnus International Festival event called Solstice: Dark and Light. The event featured musicians playing in various parts of the cathedral, as the audience moved between them. There was a soundscape of birdsong and sounds from nature, and poetry readings.

Throughout the cathedral, works were displayed that had been created by arts students from UHI Orkney and all the pieces were related to the theme of Solstice: Dark and Light.

An annular eclipse is a phenomenon whereby the moon lines up with the sun as viewed from earth, but it is too far away from the sun to cover it completely. This creates the effect of a golden ring in the sky, with just the edges of the sun shining out.

Following the one-off event, the artist agreed to offer the piece on a long-term loan to the cathedral.
