ISLAND VOICES
Island voices cry out
‘Hi’ or ‘How yadoin?’
Across a road or between people in a crowd
Near by or far away
Island people are different
More used to doing things alone
And more used to sharing
Inventive
And communal
A good mix
Islanders tend to give to those who ask
Island people come from all corners of the globe
Islanders tend to follow the opposite of the golden rule
‘Don’t do to others as you
Wouldn’t have them do to you’
Automatically
Because they know that
‘That way madness lies’
And crosser words with neighbours
Island voices discuss thing like mental illness
As though it was catching
As they used to discuss single parents long ago
Till they became so common that no one said anything….
Island voices gossip – and don’t care if its true or not
Island voices shout or whisper
Threaten loudly or quietly
Depending on who they want to hear
Island voices write things down or don’t
Depending on how long they want things to last
