Orkney Islands by Thelma Bruce

Orkney Islands

Orkney Islands

Blue skies, sea air and fertile rolling plains
Blazing sun, storm force winds or soft refreshing rain

Long summer light till midnight when golfers play our course
One of the many sports out there all available to source

If you want to study trees maybe Orkney’s not for you
Just come and visit anyhow, there really is lots to do

The flora and fauna will compensate
Freedom to roam, but please close that gate

Sportsmen and women keep the island wealthy
Nurture friendships, keep mind and body healthy

The island games an encouraging onus
With medals on offer as an added bonus

If it’s good food you are craving do visit our shops
And sample the very best brought in by our fishing boats

The rich and fertile grass we have grows beef beyond compare
Cooked by our chefs of the highest decree, a sumptuous bill of fare

The super chains are with us, indeed they have their place
Guaranteed when you are there you’ll meet a friendly face

But most of all our history is the jewel in the crown
St Magnus Cathedral stands sentinel over the town

Many more historical sites that cannot be overlooked
If you are visiting in the summer please make sure you’re booked

The most important one of all almost slipped my mind
That, no doubt when you arrive, is the welcome you will find.
