Between Islands Project, Film 3 (Western Isles)

Gannet by Archibald Thorburn, 1885

Author: Alex MacDonald, coordinator, Between Islands

The third in our series of short films by film maker Zoe Paterson Macinnes is now available to view.  Entitled “Tradition”, it is on the subject of the “guga hunt”, or bird harvesting trip made annually by the men of Ness, and features an interview with John “Dods” Macfarlane.

Zoe was one of the participants in our inter island student exchange as part of the Year of Young People in 2018, when she travelled to Shetland to make a short film. It is particularly pleasing therefore to be able to showcase her work as part of this larger project, and we have had a very positive response to the initial pieces in this series – with more to come before the end of the year.

Shetland textile by Helen Laurenson

I am equally happy to report that the work of another of our inter island placements from that time – Shetland textile student Helen Laurenson – will now be on sale in An Lanntairs shop as from today. Helen has also recently graduated and is producing island inspired designs using the brand name Variorum. The products we are stocking are limited edition and inspired by her trip to Lewis.
