Between Islands Project, Film 10 (Lewis, Western Isles)

Women knitting as they carry home the peats, Lewis.

[Alex MacDonald, coordinator, Between Islands]

Some of our online films have been created specifically to tie in with our exhibition themes. This week’s piece therefore forms part of the Shetland museum selection of topics and is on the subject of peat, and in particular the story of the ill fated Lewis chemical works in the late 1800s. Many thanks to Dr Whiteford for creating this presentation – and virtual experiment – for the project.
