One of the partnerships the Between Islands project has been delighted to develop is with UHI throughout the islands.  Shetland UHI initially assisted with our student exchange during the Year of Young People in 2018, and with funding from LEADER we were then able to create a series of inter island lectures on a variety of topics.

Professor Frank Rennie

Last autumn. Professor Frank Rennie travelled from Lewis to Kirkwall in order to deliver his lecture entitled Space, Place and Grace and Professor Donna Heddle then came from Orkney to Stornoway to give her presentation on Norse place names.

Unfortunately, the pandemic disrupted our plans for the remaining live lecture series, however I am delighted to say that this week’s film presentation is an online version of Professor Rennie’s lecture, which he has recorded specially for our youtube channel. An associated book entitled The Changing Outer Hebrides, Galson and the Meaning of Place will  be published by Acair next month and is planned to feature in Faclan, An Lanntairs (online) book festival later in the year.

In addition Between Islands are in the process of producing a publication which contains chapters written by UHI staff from throughout the islands including Professor Rennie, Professor Heddle, Dr Andrew Jennings, and Dr Emily Gal. Also contributing are our museum exhibition curators and I will keep you updated on progress.
