The Courtyard Christmas Tree
The Orkney Museum is delighted to be working with Voluntary Action Orkney in the Kirkwall Christmas Tree Festival from 1st – 12th December. Please note that the museum will be open on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 10:00-12:00, 14:00-16:00 as usual, but the courtyard will be open for people to see and enjoy the Christmas Tree.
Kirsty Rochford, the Youth Development Worker for VAO has sent this short explanation of the project.
Youth groups have not been able to do anything together for months due to the pandemic, and although they are opening up now, a lot of them still have restricted numbers. We wanted to get young people involved in a project that they could work on all together, so we asked them to make decorations to decorate Christmas trees! Even if they have had to make the decorations in their own homes, it is still a group activity, which is so important in these uncertain times. There is also a fundraising stall which is being organised by young people at Kirkwall Grammar School. They have chosen to collect for The Orkney Foodbank.
The youth groups who have decorated the trees are: The Youth Café. Ypeople, Women’s Aid Orkney, Connect, Young People’s Befriending Project, Connect, Pupils from Kirkwall Grammar School and Stromness Youth Clubs.
Hopefully the festival is going to bring a few smiles and sparkles to people after a very strange year!
